Are you looking for work?

Our Trans Employment Program  supports you through every aspect of the job search process and matches you with trans friendly employers: from setting a goal and targeting employers, to building outstanding resumes and cover letters, to practicing successful interview techniques, identifying references, and salary negotiations. We are here to help you land the job that is a perfect fit for you.

TEP team members are experts in helping you address concerns like:

  • What name do I put on my resume or application if my name is different from the one on my ID documents?
  • Should I come out to past employers or reference?
  • How do I ask my manager or team members to use my pronouns?
  • What are my rights when it comes to accessing health benefits or public accommodations at work?
  • How can I make sure others understand and respect my rights and recognize all that I have to bring to the position?

We can help make sure you are prepared and know your rights. After you are hired, we are there to help you excel and advance in your career through continued training and follow-up support.

Transcode

Transcode was developed in 2012, as a computer programming class for trans and gender non-conforming folks. Today, Transcode has grown to a community of trans & GNC people currently in tech and aspiring coders, designers, and newbies to industry.

Transcode teaches computer programming and software engineering skills through a co-working space, study groups, and Trans Tech Talks with leading trans and GNC tech professionals.

The goal of Transcode is to develop more diversity in the tech industry and to build a community of trans and gender non-conforming individuals currently in or aspiring for a career in technology through skill building, mentorship, and networking.

Class meets every Wednesday at the SF LGBT Center from 6pm to 8pm. Overacwheiving beginners looking to get a head start are encouraged to explore CodeAcademy’s courses and come to class with their questions. All classes are free and open to the community. If you are interested in volunteering as a TA or teaching a class please contact us.

Unfortunately TransCode is currently on hiatus until January, but you can join our Transcode Meetup for updates and check out our Event Calendar.

Events and Workshops

TEP co-organizes and host several annual community events including Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), the Trans Holiday Party, the Center’s LGBTQ Career Fairs and more. We believe we are stronger when we come together and celebrate each other and community. TEP offers a wide range of weekly and monthly workshops, job clubs and hiring events. Check out what is coming up next on our Events page.

Housing and other Resources

The SF LGBT Center and the Center’s Economic Development Department provides a holistic set of services aimed at the economic sustainability and self-sufficiency of trans and LGBTQ communities. These one of a kind programs include the Trans Employment Program (TEP) and many other services for youth, seniors, families, and more!

We offer a variety of resources for finding secure housing, employment, developing a small business, as well as financial coaching and credit repair. All of the Center services are free. Check out our Resources page for more information or setup an appointment for additional referrals throughout the San Francisco/ Bay Area.

Housing Support

Renting in San Francisco is getting more expensive each day and there are many more renters than there are units available, making for serious competition. Additionally, many trans and GNC folks can’t afford to rent or are homeless.

The Center’s housing program provides support and navigation of local resources.  We provide monthly affordable rental workshop and ongoing 1:1 counseling for current and potential renters. Contact us to learn more or check out our calendar.

Financial Capability and Credit Repair

The Center offers supports for LGBTQ people and our allies to develop financial security whether its starting a new job, building a business, gearing up savings, working towards homeownership or are navigating changes in career or life goals.

We also offer an innovative credit building program called Lending Circles, that can help you establish or improve your credit, increase savings and access a microloan. On average, 50 points credit score increase over a 6 month period. Lending Circles have been used to pay down debt, rebuild credit from a bankruptcy, put a down payment on a car or establish credit to secure a home loan.

The first step in this process is taking our financial capability classes, which cover all the basics, including an in-depth overview of the topic area, introduction of financial resources and practical tools to incorporate afterwards. Contact us to learn more about our classes or to schedule a 1:1 financial counseling session.

Small Business Services

From testing your idea to launching your business, the Center offers ongoing support for entrepreneurs to bring their businesses to life. Through one-on-one coaching, clients have the opportunity to meet with a business specialist who will review their current situation, assess their needs and work with them to develop a concrete action plan. Whether you’re testing out an idea or you’re looking to further establish your business, we are here to help share useful resources and facilitate an action plan to help you get moving towards attaining your goals.
